At Skills Learning Center, all concepts are given when the child is ready, and not a given chronological age.

​2-Year Old Class

THE BASICS

2-year olds are learning about:

1. INDEPENDENCE

  • Potty training

  • Putting on their shoes

  • Washing Hands

  • Cleaning up

2. THEMSELVES

  • Body parts

  • How to make friends

  • Language and communication

  • Dealing with emotions

  • Sensory awareness

​3-Year Old Class

THEY'VE GOT A LOT OF THE BASICS DOWN

3-year olds are ready for:

1. MORE INDEPENDENCE

  • Dressing themselves

  • Doing chores

  • Following more complex directions

  • Completing tasks

2. FINE MOTOR SKILLS

  • Tracing and writing their names

  • Cutting with scissors

  • Folding, drawing, coloring

3. SOCIALIZATION

  • The interest in making friends grows

  • Conflict resolution

  • Making choices

3. ENVIRONMENT

  • Following a schedule

  • Following simple directions

  • Caring for the classroom

  • Caring for others

4. GROWING

  • Awareness of their own capabilities and limitations

  • Development of gross motor skills through outdoor play and manipulative objects in the classroom

  • Awareness of counting, colors, shapes, words and music

 

5. MATH

  • Counting to 3

  • Sorting by color

  • Sorting by size

4. LANGUAGE

  • Listening ability increases

  • Rapid acquisition of new words

  • Able to express feelings verbally

  • Realization that words are made up of sounds

  • Learning phonics

  • Decoding 3 letter words

5. IMAGINATION

  • Dressing up

  • Art

  • Music

6. MATH

  • Counting to 10

  • Writing numbers 1-10

  • Simple clocks

  • Skip counting by 10

  • Distinguishing which number is bigger, e.g. 3 or 5, 6 or 2

​4-Year Old Class

WITH ALL THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND PHYSICAL ABILITY

4-year olds develop:

1. GROSS MOTOR SKILLS

    They can

  • Somersault

  • Ride bikes

  • Walk backwards

  • Balance

  • Participate in sports

2. FINE MOTOR SKILLS

  • Awareness that they can use their hands to make what their brain wants.
    Construction through any medium--art, Lego, blocks

3. INDEPENDENCE

  • Development of unique personality

  • Large vocabulary allows curiosity to develop--lots of questions

  • Memory has developed

    • Child can remember instructions and retell events and stories

4. LANGUAGE

  • Using mostly correct grammar

  • Can write their own name

  • Phonetic reading and simple writing

5. SOCIALIZATION

  • Love playing with other children of the same age

  • Play is imaginative, often with props

  • Enjoys structured environment in which develops social, physical, intellectual and emotional abilities

 

6. MATH

  • Adding

  • Subtracting

  • Skip Counting

  • Coins

  • Clocks

  • Simple division

Kindergarten (5-6 year olds)

AT THIS AGE, CHILDREN EXPLODE INTO LEARNING

They love school and love learning about biology, botany, geography, science, cultural events and history. They have a great interest in time--clocks, calendars, seasons and events that repeat annually.

1. SOCIALIZATION

  • Understand how to make friends

  • Understand that their words have power--they can make others feel good or bad through their words

  • Want to include friends in all aspects of their lives, whether they are creating art, dance, dress up, stories, play dates

  • Develop leadership skills

2. CREATIVITY

  • Love everything imaginary--unicorns, dragons, super heroes, and princesses. Even "normal" objects become part of their imaginary game.

3. LANGUAGE

  • Read well enough to enjoy simple stories

  • Can remember rules in language

  • Good pencil control and can write simple sentences

  • Letter formation and spatial consideration is good

 

4. MATH (5 year olds)

  • Addition and subtraction

  • Multiplication: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

  • Division

  • Fractions

  • Clocks: 9:10, 9:16

  • Money

5. MATH (Kindergarten)

  • Dynamic addition and subtraction - carrying, borrowing

  • Multiplication

  • Division

  • Clocks - Roman numerals

  • Coins - Decimal form

  • Beginning geometry

  • Beginning chemistry

  • Math in picture form

  • Math in word problems
